More than 29,000 birds from 132 species arrived at the Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary in Bago Region between October 2024 and January 2025, according to Daw Thin Thin Yu, the warden of the sanctuary.
Bird species from the North Pole enter their wintering grounds in the world’s southern regions via nine different migratory routes. The wintering birds from the Asia-Australian, Middle Asian, and West Asia-East Africa flyways typically arrive in Myanmar from late October to March. Some years, they stay until April before returning to their breeding grounds.
“From October of last year to January of this year, 38 species of migratory birds, 23 species of local water birds, and 71 species of amphibious birds – a total of 132 species, or more than 29,000 birds – have arrived and spent the winter in the Moeyungyi Wildlife Sanctuary,” said Daw Thin Thin Yu.
The 25,600-acre Moeyungyi Lake is home to a variety of wintering bird species this year, including the common grebe, blue wagtail, common coot, red-wattled lapwing, grey heron, wild duck, Pacific golden plover, purple swamphen, red jay, river tern, whistling duck, and common curlew.
Moeyungyi Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 120 species of mammals, 28 species of amphibians and reptiles, 33 types of insects, 77 species of domestic birds, 44 species of fish, and 74 species of aquatic plants.
