THAILAND and Myanmar had agreed to cooperate to combat online fraud gangs, the Bangkok Post reported on 18 January.

The agreement was reached after Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo and Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Digital Economy and Social Affairs met separately on 16 January during the ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting.

General Mya Tun Oo said online fraud is on the rise in ASEAN countries, including Myanmar, and urged greater cooperation in combatting online scams during the ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand on 16 and 17 January. He also elaborated that the digital transformation needs to be based on security, innovation and all-inclusiveness, and emphasized working together to build trust among users of digital services and focus on digital literacy programmes to enable people and businesses to use digital services meaningfully to achieve inclusive digital connectivity.
