The Ministry of Commerce yesterday organized a virtual meeting on free food ration distribution in Yangon Region.
During the meeting, Union Minister for Commerce Dr Than Myint said that the National-Level Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment of COVID-19 has already instructed the relevant officials to distribute food during COVID-19 crisis if necessary. The second wave of COVID-19 has severely hit Yangon Region, so the Ministry of Health and Sports imposed necessary restrictions, and consequently, the government need to distribute food for the needy people in Yangon Region, said the Union Minister.
The main objective of the meeting is to effectively distribute food, said the Union Minister. He also stressed the need to take measures which can ensure that people do not throng food distribution centres.
Similarly, the Deputy Minister for Commerce made discussions in the meeting. He said that officials in Yangon could manage to effectively distribute food during the period in which the first wave of COVID hit Yangon.
The Deputy Minister urged the participants to make suggestions on how to effectively provide a 2-week emergency food supply for poor families in Yangon. The Deputy Minister said that the Ministry of Commerce has already gathered emergency food to some extent.
Government officials, representatives from Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and its associated organizations, officials from Yangon Region Transport Authority and officials from Bayint Naung Market participated in the discussions.
