DURING six months this year, there have been more than 34,000 actions taken against undisciplined YBS drivers, said U Lyan Cin Mang, joint secretary of the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC), at a press conference on 2 July.

These actions in six months include 31,764 recorded arrests, 409 complaints (call centre), three complaints via facebook, 182 cases of driving through a red light, 1,330 speeding cases, 255 cases of lane departure, 179 reckless driving incidents, one out-of-bound driving, 106 long parking time cases, 329 overtaking cases, two rude responses, and 54 other cases, totalling 34,654 cases.

Among 31,764 recorded arrests from 1 January to 30 June 2024, the majority of them are 6,215 overtaking cases, 18,450 cases of driving with side doors open, 3,525 undisciplined parking cases and 1,254 cases of allowing people to get on and off at the traffic lights.

“There are 34,654 cases in total. Out of it, 31,764 are recorded arrests. There are 6,215 overtaking cases and 18,450 cases of driving with doors ajar, which is the biggest,” he said.

Actions are taken for complaints on drivers in accordance with 138 points of disciplinary actions specified by YRTC. At the same time, tribunals are formed to investigate the cases of conductor presence, extra fares, accidents, hidden CCTV, loss or destruction of CCTV accessories, lack of waybill, running in other routes beyond permitted one, and lack of YRTC’s ID card.

According to YRTC’s data, more than 3,600 buses on 131 bus routes carry about 1.4 million commuters every day.
