ACCORDING to the first ten days weather forecast for July, the Ayeyawady River water level at Mandalay Jetty is expected to increase from six feet to 10 feet, according to Director U Kyaw Lwin Oo of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (Upper Myanmar Branch-Mandalay).

The river water level measurement on 1 July showed the Ayeyawady river water level at Mandalay Jetty reached 893 centimetres and was below 12 feet of its danger level.

“The monsoon rain starts in upper Myanmar by the end of the early monsoon season. The river water level will increase soon. The river water level increases in early monsoon period, and the flood starts. According to the records of river water level in the middle parts of Ayeyawady River, the water level is high between the second week of July and second week of August,” he said.

During the past 24 hours, the water level increased up to eight feet in Myitkyina township, and it exceeded 152 centimetres (five feet) over the 1,200 centimetres of danger level, and it is expected to increase further two feet within two days. Similarly, the Ayeyawady River water at Mandalay Jetty is also anticipated to grow between six to 10 feet.

“The river water level at Mandalay Jetty may decline within one or two days, but it might increase later on 3 July. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology also released a statement saying the river water level can increase six to 10 feet within the first ten days of July,” he continued. The Meteorology and Hydrology releases flood warnings in a timely manner so that the public can carry out necessary preparations.
