THE Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems, under the Ministry of Transport and Communications, has issued a notification advising vessels to exercise particular caution, especially at night, due to the potential for riverbank collapses along the Ayeyawady River, which may dislodge large trees and submerged stumps, posing hazards to navigation.

The Ayeyawady River is expected to enter a period of high water soon. Due to the gradual rise in the river’s water level, areas upstream, such as Bhamo, Shwegu, and Htigyaingt townships, are experiencing bank collapses when the river rises, leading to damage to old trees near the riverbank.

Such collapses may result in the floating of trees or tree fragments in the river, prompting the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems Region 5 to issue a warning to vessels from Mandalay Port to exercise special care.

Similarly, the department has issued a notification to vessels departing Mandalay Port for Bhamo Township, advising them to exercise particular caution when navigating through unfamiliar waterways instead of their usual routes.
