THE Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement handed over cash assistance yesterday morning to relevant officials to give the money to vulnerable women including disabled women amid the COVID-19 crisis.
The lists of the vulnerable women were compiled by Myanmar Women and Children Development Foundation (MWCDF) and the Emergency Response Joint Committee on COVID-19.
The event held via video conferencing was participated by Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye, Deputy Minister U Soe Aung, and the directors-general of the ministry, MWCDF Joint Secretary Daw Khin Mya Win, Myanmar Federation of Persons with Disabilities (MFPD) General Secretary U Myat Thu Win, other relevant officials and vulnerable women including disabled women.
During the event, the Union Minister said that the ministry is conducting the COVID-19 Economic Relief Plan (CERP), which also focuses on providing financial assistance to members of vulnerable group: women, children, elderly people and the disabled. He pointed out that women could not earn enough money during the COVID-19 crisis, and that’s why the government has provided financial support to them.
The Union Minister said that the MWCDF has been providing vocational training to vulnerable women and creating jobs for them. He said that the ministry is also working for the welfare of the disabled, and the Emergency Response Joint Committee on COVID-19 compiled the list of disabled women who need financial support. He said that the budget of CERP is limited, and urged relevant organizations and departments to take efforts in order to spend the money effectively for those who are eligible for the financial supports.
MWCDF Joint Secretary Daw Khin Mya Win and MFPD General Secretary U Myat Thu Win expressed thanks for the financial support.
The Department of Rehabilitation Deputy Director-General handed over a total of K11.2 million to officials of the MWCDF for 224 vulnerable women in conflict-hit areas and far-flung villages. The Yangon Region Department of Social Welfare Director handed over a total of K15 million to an official of MFPD for 300 disabled women.
