THE ferry service between Yangon and Cocogyun Township was launched on 2 September, and the first ferry, MV Charites owned by Thuriya Sandar Win Company, departed Bo Aung Kyaw Port, Yangon at 3:30 pm on that day.
The plan came after the instruction of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi during her visit to the island last month, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications supervised the arrangements to launch the ferry service.
The people aboard the first ferry trip were 13 crews, 3 from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, 43 company workers for electrification project for the township and 20 passengers. Prior to the trip, they have already been quarantined in the designated Quarantine Centre as part of COVID-19 mitigation measures.
The ferry also carried lamp posts (831.5 tonnes of total weight) provided by the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation for electrification project, solar panel and related equipment, 2 ambulances donated by the Yangon Region government, and 4 cars to be used for township development tasks.
Yangon Region Minister for Electricity, Industry, Roads and Communications Daw Nilar Kyaw and other relevant officials inspected the ferry service at Bo Aung Kyaw Port.
