THE government is arranging to appoint more staff at the Support Centres for Foreign Workers in the Republic of Korea to enhance services for Myanmar migrant workers there, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

More effective support for Myanmar workers is needed as the number of Myanmar citizens working in the ROK increases, prompting the government to assign more staff at the support centres in different parts of the ROK, according to U Thant Sin, Ambassador of Myanmar to the Republic of Korea.

The decision to place more staff at the support centres came after some Myanmar workers working for agricultural businesses in Korea suffered as their employers fail to protect them with industrial accident insurance, and the programmes to introduce Korean employers to Myanmar workers who came back home while working in Korea for various reasons delayed, the ambassador said.

The ambassador of Myanmar to the ROK has advised the Ministry of Labour in South Korea to further emphasize plans for overseas workers, including Myanmar, to reduce occupational hazards by informing employers and employees.

The South Korean government is planning to update EPS (Employment Permit Sys tem) as the current socioeconomic situation has changed, according to the Ministry of Labour (ROK).

Workers from 16 countries including Myanmar are working in the ROK under the EPS system and Myanmar workers are primarily employed in agricultural, livestock-breeding and manufacturing sectors.
