AFTER three days of continuous heavy rain, some residential houses were flooded in Ward No 1 and Ward No 2 of Maei, Taungup Township.
According to the Township Development Committee, the flooding is not caused by the rising water from the Maei River, but by the blocking of drains and water outlets in some areas of the neighbourhoods. To improve the flow of water in the city’s drains, the officials dredged drains in almost the entire city in the financial year 2019-2020.
During the dredging, some people did not want to damage the concrete culverts in front of their houses, and they requested that they be excavated according to their plan, so the officials stopped the work.
U Nyi Nyi Lwin, executive officer of the Maei Town Development Committee, said that he wants the people to participate with their conscience ensuring that there are no floods like this and to ensure that the water flows in the city’s sewers. The households that were flooded due to heavy rains have been evacuated under the plan and supervision of the Disaster Management Committee. Now when the water has receded and the clean-up work has been completed, the people will be able to move back to their homes shortly.
