Prawn farms in Kawthoung maintain export to Thailand amidst pandemic

The prawns produced from the saltwater prawn farming of Thahtay Island in Kawthoung Town, Thaninthayi Region, were being exported to Thailand amid COVID-19 pandemic, according to Kawthoung District Fisheries Department.

On 24 January, a total of 5.85 tonnes of white prawns were exported to Thailand.

A total of 69.85 tonnes of the prawns worth US$ 0.129 million were also exported to Thailand in 12 batches during the financial years of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 until January 2021.

Grand Andaman Co Ltd was breeding saltwater prawns on the farms of 124 acres on Thahtay Island in Kawthoung Town , employing about 100 workers and creating job opportunities for over 400 family members of the workers.

The prawns produced from the farms were sold to hotels in local in the past and exported to Thailand during the coronavirus pandemic.

Kawthoung DMO holds coordination meeting on tourism revival

KAWTHOUNG District-Level Destination Management Organization (DMO) held a coordination meeting on tourism revival in accordance with the health directives of the Ministry of Health and Sports yesterday in Kawthoung.

Departmental officials, hotel and tour operators, and tour guides participated in the discussion and gave suggestions.

The Kawthoung District DMO aims to develop tourism destinations based on the traditional culture and natural resources of the region with the participation of the respective stakeholders, to respond to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and to facilitate the visit of tourists when domestic and foreign tourism recovers in the post-COVID-19 period, to ensure the security and safety and to pre-plan the development of community-based tourism and the recovery of Myanmar’s tourism sector.

There are about 11 beautiful islands for day trips, 26 islands for snorkelling and adventure trips and 13 islands for scuba diving trip. Seaborne tours are more likely to attract tourists than city tours in Kawthoung. Besides, the Salone or Mawkin people, a rare human race that attracts tourists, can be found in some islands of Kawthoung. In the past, Singaporean luxury cruise ships used to visit the seas and islands of Kawthoung as day trips from Phuket, Thailand, according to the records of the Department of Hotels and Tourism.
