NEARLY five million students enrolled at basic education schools within the five-day enrolment period, according to the statement from the Department of Basic Education.

The enrolment week for the 2022-2023 Academic Year was set from 26 May to 1 June, and a total of 4,894,428 students enrolled at basic education schools, private schools, and monastic schools in respective regions and states.

The current enrolment figures are many times higher than last year.

“If school-age children will not be able to go to school, in time they will end up on the side of the road. For three years now, children have been out of school because of COVID-19 and politics. This year, we decided to enrol them,” said a parent in North Okkalapa Township.

Attitudes are different regarding school enrolment, but for the sake of their children, they did what they thought was right, the parent added.

There is absolutely no fee for enrolment, and textbooks, notebooks, pencils and one set of school uniforms will be distributed to the students from Kindergarten to Grade-5. In addition, students from Grade-6 to Grade-11 will be provided with textbooks, notebooks, pencils and stationery, the Ministry of Education has announced.
