THE 21st ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime – 21st SOMTC, hosted by Brunei Darussalam, was held yesterday through videoconferencing.

The meeting was attended by SOMTC leaders led by officials from the 10 ASEAN nations, the ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General and the party. Officials led by Deputy Director-General of the Myanmar Police Force Aung Aung, the leader of SOMTC from Myanmar, also joined the meeting.

The SOMTC leaders briefed on each country’s effort, regional and international cooperation to combat transnational crimes. The meeting discussed each country’s results and reports on the fight against arms trafficking, terrorism, human trafficking, cybercrime and illegal wildlife and timber trafficking in 2020. The implementation of the 2019-2021 SOMTC activities from the 2016-2025 ASEAN Transnational Crime Prevention Action Plan Framework were reviewed in detail.

Myanmar discussed its activities and regional cooperation, including with ASEAN, in fighting against violence, human trafficking, money laundering and illegal drugs. Brunei Darussalam led the discussion on the implementation plan of the SOMTC Action Plan 2022- 2021 of the ASEAN Framework. Respective countries discussed the preparations for the coordination meeting with its dialogue partners, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, European Union, India, New Zealand, Russia and the United States, that are cooperating in the fight against transnational crime.

The meetings with the dialogue partners will be held on 28 and 29 July 2021, it is reported.
