THE  basic  education  schools  were closed in the 2020-2021 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the government reopens the schools for the 2021-2022  academic  year  starting  1  June.

“We make preparations under  the  instructions  to  reopen  the schools. We accepted the enrolment  of  students  between  24  and 31 May. We will continue accepting during school days. The school  can  accommodate  more  than  6,000  students.  Now,  over 2,000 students — 30 per cent — were enrolled. The students will keep their social distancing in the classroom. The teachers, security members  and  town  elders  will  provide security for the students,” said Daw Win Win Nwe, headmistress of Kamayut TTC.

Then, a student said, “I am so happy when I meet my friends at  school  as  we  haven’t  met  for  more  than  one  year.  I  continued  studying  my  lessons  since  schools closed.”

Daw San San Maw, the mother of a student from B.E.H.S (2) Latha, also said, “We are expecting  the  reopening  of  schools.  I  don’t  let  anything  affects  my  daughter’s  education.  Being  a  student’s parent, I want my child to  become  an  educated  person.  Education is the key.”

The  monastic  schools  have  also reopened in addition to the basic education schools.

Pyinnya Theikpan Monastic School and Youths Development Parahita  Home  Sayadaw  Maha  Sadhamma  Jotikadhaja  Bhaddanta Pannasami mentioned, “The Director  of  Yangon  Region  Basic Education Department came here  and  discussed  with  us  to  reopen monastic schools. There are only a few students at every school during the early period of school reopening in the 2020-2021 academic year. We will teach just a  few  students  at  our  schools.  We  also  urge  the  teachers.  The  government  provided  teaching  aid  materials  including  school  textbooks and COVID-19 protective gears.”

The  government  launched  the  school  enrollment  week  between  24  and  31  May.  A  total  of  355,771 students enrolled in Yangon Region.
