A virtual coordination meeting on the current rice market situation: rice procurement and export issues was held at the Conference Hall (1) of the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday. Union Minister for Commerce Dr Pwint San said that the state should focus on the agriculture and livestock breeding sector’s capabilities in other economic sectors. “In setting the direction, the relevant departments and stakeholders from the private sector must work together for the continuous development of the rice supply chain,” the Union Minister said. He also stressed the need to work together to succeed in the activities under the Farmers’ Rights Protection and Benefits Promotion Law. Next, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Tin Htut Oo briefed on the situation of monsoon paddy and summer paddy cultivation in the country, harvesting and transportation conditions and transition to mechanized farming to increase paddy yields and increase access to irrigation water. He also discussed the local rice market’s current situation and the plans for issuing plant pest control recommendations for smoother rice export. Then, Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Trade U Aung Naing Oo said that the Myanmar Rice Federation had lent 30 billion kyats for export financing to facilitate the export of 100,000 tons of rice to Bangladesh under the G to G program. He said the Myanmar exporters should constantly monitor the changes in the international rice market and make preparations. He also added the government and the private sector must work more closely to ensure that Myanmar’s rice exports to have a better balance. Next, the Union Ministers and officials coordinated to solve the difficulties encountered by the businessmen. Deputy Minister for Commerce U Nyunt Aung, Permanent Secretary, Directors-General, officials from Myanmar Rice Association, Myanmar Rice Traders Association and Myanmar Rice Entrepreneurs Association and stakeholders involved in the rice sector also attended the meeting.
