Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement held a coordination meeting on the implementation of the National Standard Action Plan on Readmission, Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Trafficked Persons, through videoconferencing in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye said that regular employment became difficult to get during the COVID-19 crisis and the increasing use of the internet may increase the number of victims of human trafficking through scams on the internet in the country, and it is important to note that the victims include not only young women and girls but also men.
He added the forming of the Central Body for the Suppression of Trafficking in Persons for the effective implementation of the provisions of Trafficking in Persons Law.
The Ministry has been cooperating with working groups and related departments, social organizations and United Nations’ agencies and INGOs and putting efforts to complete the work in the annual action plan of the Five-Year Anti-Trafficking Plan drawn up by the Central Body for the Suppression of Trafficking in Persons.
In addition, the implementation of the process includes the forming of National Standard Action Plan on Readmission, Repatriation to Parents and Family Reunification of the Trafficked Persons.
The Union Minister urged to suggest the advantages and disadvantages of existing projects and on future activities and policies in order to bring the best benefits and provide consistent services in accordance with the National Standard Actin Plan. He said the successful implementation of readmission, reintegration and rehabilitation of victims of trafficking would have an impact on the prevention of human trafficking and public awareness of the legal and litigation process will help reduce and eliminate human trafficking.
He also added the importance of the role of community-based anti-trafficking bodies such as ward and village administrators, auxiliary fire brigade, Red Cross Members, Women’s Committee and relevant local police force in anti-trafficking in persons because of their closeness to the public.
After the discussion of the attendees, the Union Minister said to carry out widespread and effective educating to the public as anti-human trafficking and rehabilitation activities are one of the State Government’s priorities, and he called for the cooperation between community-based anti-trafficking bodies, officials from the Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Departments and public to be able to effectively implement the National Standard Action Plan on Readmission, Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Trafficked Persons.
The online meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Soe Aung, the Permanent Secretary, the Directors-General, officials and Ministers for Security and Border Affairs from the respective states, regions and Nay Pyi Taw Council.—MNA (Translated by Ei Phyu Phyu Aung)
