THE Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Sports held a coordination meeting on the effective combination of sports and education and the formation of a committee for the combination of sports and education yesterday.
Union Minister Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, Union Minister Dr. Myint Htwe, Deputy Ministers U Win Maw Tun, Dr. Mya Lay Sein, the Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General of Education Department and Health and Sports Department and the officials of regions and states departments joined the meeting.
Union Minister Dr.Myo Thein Gyi first said the meeting was held to seek the opinions to organize the committee for the combination of sports and education and stressed the critical role of physical or fitness education at the basic education schools.
He discussed the lack of curriculum for physical education in the old curriculum, weakness to fully support the sports equipment including the instructors in the previous, KG+G-12 education system with the compulsory syllabus including physical subject, the appointment of BSc, Sports degree holders for the KG+G12 education system, the passion of an athlete for vocational training to join the universities for their life insurance, cooperation work with the Ministry of Health and Sports to create opportunities for the athletes to keep their study at the universities of the ministry after studying at the sports and physical science schools, efforts of two ministries in the providing more sports stadiums at the basic education schools across the country and in holding the sports competitions at basic schools and university including ASEAN universities games.
Union Minister Dr. Myint Htwe discussed the formation of a committee to accelerate the moves by cooperating with the education sector, efforts of ministry in conducting COVID-19 prevention, control and treatment activities and public healthcare services amid COVID-19 pandemic, immune-boosting exercises, COVID-19 vaccination plan, advice to follow the COVID-19 rules and to do proper physical exercises, 85 percent of death rate in Myanmar with non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, the importance of physical exercises to reduce the risk of these non –communicable diseases including COVID-19.
He also stressed the benefits of doing physical exercises for mental and physical health, systematic duties for forming the committee to carry out the combination of sports and education, the formation of regions, states, districts, and townships level committees, benefits of physical sports curriculum for basic education schools, the contribution of sports gear to the schools by the ministry, budget estimate to purchase the needed sports gear, to construct the stadiums and sports halls, work plans to implement the effective combination of sports and education.
Then, Deputy Minister for Education U Win Maw Tun briefed the cooperation works between the sports and education and work programmes to host the Asian University Games in 2018 while the Deputy Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Mya Lay Sein presented the programmes and aims of the formation of a committee for the combination of sports and education.
The department officials coordinated the meeting, and then Union Minister Dr. Myo Thein Gyi and Union Minister Dr. Myint Htwe concluded the meeting.
