MINISTRY of Labour, Immigration and Population held a coordination meeting on sending migrant workers to the Republic of Korea yesterday.

Union Minister U Thein Swe and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Myanmar Mr Lee Sang Hwa participated in the meeting through videoconferencing.

The meeting discussed the immediate reply to the submission of the amendment MoU (draft) from Myanmar to the Ministry of Employment and Labour of ROK in order to renew the MoU and the plans to continue to seek comments and approvals from the relevant departments, committees and the Union Government if both parties agree.

According to the MoU, Myanmar has sent a total of 41,538 migrant workers to the Republic of Korea with EPS system since 2011. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the sending process has now been temporarily suspended from 18 March, and a total of 195 returning workers were sent back in accordance with the health regulations from 2 September to 25 November.

The meeting also discussed the matters relating with acceptance of re-entry workers who are waiting to leave due to the temporary suspension of receiving them by the ROK.

As of 30 November, there are 4,143 candidates passed the EPS-TOPIK Korean Language Proficiency Test and are in the waiting list, and a total of 1,130 workers who worked in the Republic of Korea for 4 years and 10 months are waiting to leave as re-entry workers.

The meeting discussed the conditions for extending one year to the queue period of the 3,481 people who have passed the 12th qualifying exam and are in the waiting list as the queue expires in December and accepting the 14th qualification exam application using mobile application due to the traffic restrictions during COVID-19.

During the discussion, they cordially discussed to carry out systematically in accordance with the health regulations of the two countries and the immigration regulations of the ROK and further cooperation for the migrant worker programmes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
