THE Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation held a coordination meeting on the development of cooperative sectors via videoconferencing yesterday.

During the meeting, Union Minister Dr Aung Thu discussed the network of cooperatives for farmers to gain fair prices for their farm products and the consumers to get products at low prices, distribution of agrochemicals, development of seed-producing cooperatives, the emergence of contract farming to promote the interests of farmers and management to apply checks and balances on local cooperative organizations to become successful like international cooperative associations.

The Union Minister also stressed the important role of leaders at the cooperative associations. He then emphasized the participation of 4.2 million members of cooperative, the draft of a law for farmers and efforts of cooperative in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister U Hla Kyaw, Permanent Secretary U Kyaw Min Oo, the Directors-Generals, Chairman of co-operative association, Heads of Regions and States Co-operative Department and other officials.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has organized a total of 39,470 cooperative societies with 4.2 million members across the nation, granted K375.35 billion loan to 1.75 million members according to 7/2020 data and sold 64,230 machines worth of more than K110 billion to 48,393 members on an installment system.
