MYANMAR’S natural gas is being extracted from offshore projects, and geologists have confirmed, based on data obtained from 3D seismic surveys of sandstone reservoirs beneath the seabed and the results of exploratory drilling wells, that significant natural gas reserves exist not only in the shallow-water offshore areas where production is currently taking place, but also in deep-water offshore regions.

The successful development of four offshore projects currently in operation in Myanmar has enabled natural gas to be utilized in electricity generation, fertilizer production and various manufacturing industries, thereby making a substantial contribution to the country’s economic development.

At present, preparations are under way to develop four additional projects. Among them, the project being implemented in the Ayeyawady offshore area and the project in the Taninthayi offshore area are considered highly promising due to their large gas reserves and strong potential.

The Ayeyawady offshore project is located in the deep-water section of the Ayeyawady offshore region. Exploratory and appraisal wells have indicated a gas reservoir with the potential to contain up to 14 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves. Work is currently under way to bring the field into commercial production.

The Tanintharyi offshore project is situated in the deep-water section of the Taninthayi offshore region. The field has been confirmed as a natural gas reservoir and is estimated to contain approximately 95 trillion cubic feet of natural gas with a 90 per cent probability level (P90). Further exploratory drilling will be carried out, and once the volume of reserves has been determined with greater accuracy, steps will be taken towards commercial production, according to available information.
