THE Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Education and the Yangon Region Government, yesterday morning, jointly held a virtual meeting over preparation for a virtual ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the University of Yangon.

The virtual meeting was attended by Union Minister for Information Dr Pe Myint, Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Deputy Minister for Education U Win Maw Tun, Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe, Yangon Region Minister for Social Affairs U Naing Ngan Lin, other government officials, Rectors’ Committee Chairperson Dr Zaw Wai Soe (Rector of University of Medicine 1) and Rector of the University of Yangon Dr Phoe Kaung.

During the meeting, Union Minister Dr Pe Myint said that the Ministry of Information is making significant efforts to help the Ministry of Education prepare well for the ceremony marking the centennial of the University of Yangon.

He said that the Ministry of Information is contributing to many programmes marking the centennial of the University of Yangon. Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) has broadcast TV programmes marking the centenary of the University of Yangon. Similarly, the newspapers published by the News and Periodicals Enterprise are featuring articles and interviews to mark the 100th anniversary of the University of Yangon. He added that the Information and Public Relations Department has also organized exhibitions and contests celebrating the 100th anniversary.

MRTV also broadcasts songs featuring the university every week. It also produced and broadcast Traditional Ah-nyeint featuring the university.

The ceremony marking the centennial of the University of Yangon will be held only in the virtual mode because of COVID-19 pandemic. It will be held on 1 December this year in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Sports.

Union Minister Dr Pe Myint said that the Information and Public Relations Department held a photo contest, a cartoon contest, an art contest, and creative writing contests including an article contest, a poetry contest, and a short story competition. The Information and Public Relations Department will present awards to winners of the photo contest. The Ministry of Education will present awards to winners of the remaining contests.

He said that there are further programmes that the Ministry of Information will contribute to.

Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi said that the 100th anniversary of the University of Yangon was planned to celebrate grandly, but only virtual celebrations will be made because of COVID-19. He also highlighted the assistance given by the Ministry of Information in preparation for the virtual celebrations.

The Union Minister for Education said that there are about 100 programmes for the centenary celebration of the University of Yangon. He noted that 17 Steering Committees and Working Committees had been formed for the successful implementation of the ceremony marking the centenary of the University of Yangon.

Sports competitions and some exhibitions marking the centenary were held in December 2019 and January, February and March this year, according to Dr Myo Thein Gyi. After COVID-19 pandemic began in Myanmar in this year’s March, other programmes marking the centenary have been implemented in a virtual format.

The award ceremonies of the centenary celebration will include a video of experts’ reading research papers on the 100th anniversary of the University of Yangon. The Organizing Committee for Research Paper Reading has been chaired by Rector Dr Zaw Wai Soe.

The Union Minister for Education said that the centenary celebration will be broadcast live on MRTV Facebook Page. He called on the authorities of the University of Yangon to arrange that the centenary celebration can also be broadcast on the Facebook Page of the University of Yangon.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein said that under the supervision of the State Counsellor, the Union Government had prepared well for the ceremony to be held in Yangon.

He expressed thanks to all the stakeholders who have been involved in the preparations for the ceremony. He pledged that the regional government would provide necessary assistance for all the matters related to the centenary celebration.

U Ye Naing, Director-General of the MRTV, explained the activities of the Information Working Committee, and Dr Thein Win, Director-General of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, presented the arrangements for the centenary celebration.

The participants made discussions and suggestions for the centenary celebration, and Union Minister Dr Myo Thein Gyi delivered the closing speech of the meeting.
