Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win attended the ceremony marking 2025 World Diabetes Day in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Speaking at the event, the Union minister said diabetes is a major factor in causing premature death, and at least 11.1 per cent of the world population is suffering from diabetes in the world. The majority of patients are suffering from Type 2 diabetes, and about 43 per cent of those affected are unaware that they have the disease. According to data from the International Diabetes Federation, around 3.4 million people worldwide die from diabetes each year, with most of these deaths occurring in middle- and low-income countries.

Union Minister Dr Thet Khaing Win highlighted the theme for this year, “Know more and do more for diabetes at work.”

He continued that if efforts to prevent and control non-communicable diseases are carried out effectively, the life expectancy of the public will increase. The clinics for diabetes and hypertension are being established at the rural health departments to offer medical checkups every Wednesday. He continued that in Myanmar, 7.9 per cent of the population has diabetes, according to the data.

Following his speech, a video commemorating World Diabetes Day 2025 was screened, after which the Union minister toured the commemorative mini-exhibition.
