The Myanmar delegation, led by Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, attended the opening ceremony of the 2025 Global South Media and Think Tank Forum at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, yesterday.

The attendees observed the Yunnan products and ancient artworks displayed at the event, and enjoyed the video clip of Yunnan’s dance troupe.

Wang Ning, Yunnan Province Party Secretary, Hu Heping, from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Fu Hua, President of Xinhua news agency and officials discussed the enhancement of cooperation with the global south media.

A rescue team leader, who participated in the Yunnan rescue team arriving in Myanmar after the Mandalay earthquake first, talked about the rescue activities in Myanmar, the effective rescue works of Chinese and Yunnan rescue teams, and showed the record photos that depict a better Myanmar-China friendship.

The Director of the Fire Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs also explained the experience in rescue works after the Mandalay earthquake and cooperation with the Yunnan province rescue team.

At noon, the preliminary meeting of the high-level forum continued, and the Union minister said today, along with the advancement of modern technologies, all can see that the media sector is also improving and transforming day by day. At present, everyone is aware that AI technology is driving both developments and controversial issues.

Due to AI technology, all can now witness that tasks, which were once difficult to carry out, can be easily created and performed. However, it also recognizes that, in terms of laws and ethics, there are challenges and potential negative impacts. Therefore, it is very important to use AI technology in the media effectively, to ensure its application in line with common regulations, to narrow the technological gap known as the Digital Divide, and to promote collaboration among countries in the global south.

He continued that Myanmar is willing to strengthen cooperation with media organizations of the countries of the Global South. Through this forum, it should continue fostering new exchanges and cooperation. By working together to combat fake news and misinformation spreading around the world, all can ensure that accurate information reaches both nations and their people. This will help promote mutual understanding and build stronger bonds of friendship, and contribute to creating a more peaceful and harmonious world. Therefore, all should strive together with the collective strength and unity of the Global South countries.

The Union minister signed an LOI on media cooperation with Chinese Information Minister Ms Zeng Yan. The six departments and organizations, including MRTV and Yunnan Media Group-YMG, approved and recorded the agreement on media cooperation by touching the screen on the video wall.

At the Yunnan-Myanmar information cooperation workshop, the Union minister and Chinese officials discussed the information cooperation, fast exchange of news data, sharing of broadcasting schemes and cooperation in print media.

After the meeting, the information Ministers of China and Myanmar exchanged gifts.
