Myanmar Consumer Protection Commission held its (1/2020) coordination meeting via zoom application at the Ministry of Commerce yesterday morning.
During the meeting, Chairman of the MCPC and Union Minister for Commerce Dr Than Myint said the ministry is carrying out many sectors like trade promotion, trade facilitation, trade negotiation, trade liberalization, trade education, consumer protections in addition to the development of SMEs, job opportunities, special economic zones and private sectors.
The Consumer Protection Law was enacted on 15 March 2019 and MCPC was formed with 21 members to protect the interest of consumers. Then, the commission’s 1/2019 meeting was held on 15 November 2019 and stipulated nine resolutions at the meeting.
The commission drafted policies and plans for consumer protection affairs according to the authority, prioritized the products for the safety of consumers, organized the regions/states consumer affairs committees and self-administered regions or areas consumer affairs committees including district consumer affairs committees if necessary, made decision or set out fines on the processes submitted by the department or committee, released statement to protect the consumers against the rising prices of basic foodstuffs and medical supplies during COVID-19 pandemic, and conducted survey in the market by the Consumer Affairs Department in line with the instruction of commission.
The MCPC Vice-Chair and Deputy Minister for Commerce U Aung Htoo discussed that the commission needs to systematically implement the NCPP of the Consumer Affairs Department while setting programmes and policies for the development of consumer protection affairs and it also needs to carry out the action plans in NCPP, to form working groups for respective sectors and to draft SOP.
Then, Director-General of the Consumer Affairs Department briefed the performance of the department while Deputy Director-General explained the remarks.
The Union Minister called on the participation of all commission members in protecting the interest of consumers and concluded the meeting.
