At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Dr Aung Zeya who is also Chair of Myanmar’s Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) National Authority attended the Russia-Myanmar Coordination Meeting on Biosecurity Cooperation held on 22 May in Moscow.
During the morning session, Dr Aung Zeya and officials from relevant Russian biosecurity agencies discussed global and Asia-Pacific regional efforts to mitigate biological threats and infectious diseases that may arise from humans, animals, plants, genetically modified crops and biological products. The dialogue aimed to deepen strategic cooperation between Russia and Myanmar, highlighting mutual interest in fostering long-term friendship and biosecurity for the benefit of both countries’ populations.
Following the session, the Russian delegation hosted a lunch in honour of the Myanmar delegation. In the afternoon session, both sides continued discussions on long-term strategic cooperation in biosecurity and joint mechanisms for the prevention and control of biological hazards and infectious outbreaks.
Myanmar became the 171st member of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) on 1 December 2014 and has been committed to upholding the provisions and obligations of the Convention. Referring to Article X of the BWC, which promotes international cooperation in science and technology. Myanmar seeks to strengthen national biosecurity in collaboration with Russia, a country renowned for its advanced expertise and peaceful application of scientific and technological knowledge. This partnership is expected to support Myanmar’s national goals and intensify international cooperation in the biosecurity sector.
