The meeting 2/2024 of the Central Committee on Intellectual Property Rights was held yesterday afternoon at the Ministry of Commerce conference room in Nay Pyi Taw. The meeting featured a speech from General Mya Tun Oo, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications, who chairs the committee.
General Mya Tun Oo highlighted that the government has successfully implemented intellectual property laws, facilitating the application processes for trademark registrations, industrial designs, and copyrights. He noted that Myanmar’s intellectual property registration system has begun to develop similarly to other ASEAN and global nations. He expressed the importance of member countries collaborating on intellectual property initiatives within the ASEAN region to establish Myanmar as a leading nation.
He emphasized the need for the government to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through funding, technology, and other assistance while also enabling these businesses to protect their brands and creations through intellectual property rights. He stated that this would enhance MSME development and facilitate the marketing of innovations from universities and research centres.
Furthermore, he underscored the necessity of building an effective intellectual property protection system aimed at improving the socioeconomic lives of the public. He urged relevant ministries and organizations to work together in line with the established national intellectual property strategy, encouraging participation from various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and experts in the field.
Following his address, the committee’s secretary from the Ministry of Commerce reported on the decisions made during the previous first meeting and outlined the progress achieved.
Participants discussed various issues related to intellectual property and offered suggestions relevant to their respective sectors. The meeting concluded with a closing statement from General Mya Tun Oo, who expressed gratitude to all attendees for their contributions and officially adjourned the session.
