THE 2023 International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies was held yesterday morning at the Department of Environmental Conservation under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation in Nay Pyi Taw attended by Union Minister U Khin Maung Yi, deputy ministers, the permanent secretary, department heads and representatives.
The Union minister first highlighted that the theme for this year’s International Clean Air Day celebration is “Together for Clean Air” To increase cooperation at the international level; It is being held with the purpose of increasing air quality measures and solutions and sharing responsibilities according to roles in order to overcome air pollution.
Access to clean air is important for human health and daily life; Air pollution is a serious threat to human health worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, about 6.7 million people die each year due to air pollution, and about 24 million people are exposed to the dangers of indoor air pollution.
Since air pollution is transboundary in nature, the regional level deals with the problem of transboundary air pollution that often occurs between neighbouring countries. National and international cooperation should be increased. To reduce Transboundary Haze Pollution Problems, Myanmar has signed the ASEAN Agreement on Cross-Border Smog Pollution Control and is cooperating internationally.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change along with air pollution; use of renewable energy sources; Development of green economic sectors and clean air for future generations and the Union Minister encouraged that they all must work together to pass on a green environment and good ecological systems. Then a video was shown commemorating the 2023 International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and took the documentary photos together. The Union minister and the attendees viewed the display of commemorative posters.
