Myanmar hosted 4.4 mln tourists in 2019; Mandalay records over 680,000 visitors

OF the 4.4 million tourists who visited Myanmar last year, more than 680,000 travelers headed to Mandalay Region, according to data released by the Mandalay Region Directorate of Hotels and Tourism.

In 2018, Mandalay welcomed 492,097 tourists, while the country received more than 3.5 million visitors, as per data from the department.

Famous tourist destinations in the region include U Bein bridge, Taungthaman Lake, world heritage site Kuthodaw Pagoda, Myanansankyaw the Golden Palace, Mahamuni Pagoda, Mandalay Hill, and other ancient buildings and pagodas. Myanmar’s intangible cultural heritageits ten most wellknown arts and crafts — proved to be another attraction for tourists. Travelers also flocked to historical buildings and pagodas in the old capital, Innwa (Ava), and the UNESCO cultural heritage site, Bagan. 

The regional Directorate of Hotels and Tourism is drawing up some projects, in collaboration with the regional government and tourist operators, to boost tourism in Mandalay Region this year.

Tourist arrivals in Mandalay Region were registered at 75,727 in 2010, 99,016 in 2011, 160,975 in 2012, 219,518 in 2013, 242,566 in 2014, 306,432 in 2015, 385,031 in 2016, and 483,784 in 2017, ac-cording to data provided by the regional department.
