THE Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population and the Thales, a French multinational company, jointly organized an e-ID and e-passport workshop yesterday at the ministry in Nay Pyi Taw.

Speaking at the workshop, Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe said his ministry, after forming a working committee, is implementing an e-ID system which would collect the biometric data of people in Myanmar and add them to a database after individual data are assigned Unique Identity (UID) numbers and registered.

The implementation of the e-ID system is a huge task and also a fundamental need for an e-government system, he said.

The governments of Myanmar and Austria are collaborating on the project, and arrangements are being made for the signing of a contract between the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population and Austria-based OeSD Company, said U Thein Swe.

The Union Minister added his ministry is going to roll out the e-ID system in two years in three phases, and is also organizing meetings and workshops for the e-ID working committee and sub-committees.

Yesterday’s workshop was held to discuss methodology that would help improve in the Digital Scurve, which the government is aiming for. With the aid of the French Embassy in Myanmar, experts from French company Thales participated in the work-shop and discussed matters related to the e-ID system.

“The solution from the Thales company will assist not only in national security, but also digital economy development. In addition, it will also help accelerate digital transformation in public and private electronic service sectors, in order to establish an e-ID system,” said Union Minister U Thein Swe.

Afterwards, the Union Minister urged the members of the working committee and sub-committees to enquire about the facts that should be known and any aspects they need more clarity on as the implementation of the e-ID system will begin soon.

He called for cooperation on the e-ID project which is a priority for the government, and also expressed thanks to the French Ambassador and officials from the Thales company for helping organize the workshop.

Then, French Ambassador Mr. Christian Lechervy explained the conditions for assistance of the workshop.

Director Mr Dieter Dhondl and e-ID experts from Thales company also spoke about   several matters, including their company, implementation of Myanmar’s e-government system, and creating a smart nation in a rapidly changing world. They also shared the experiences of e-government service users, reviewed the e-ID proposal and ID solution of Thales company, and discussed making payments using e-IDs.
