The Department of Fisheries has more than K3.5 billion allocated as a research fund and is currently carrying out research activities, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

At present, the department is conducting research on the incidence of diseases affecting aquatic animals as part of its fisheries-related projects.

Since outbreaks of fish diseases in aquaculture can cause extremely high financial losses, the research is being undertaken to help fish and shrimp farming operations in the Taninthayi Region prevent the introduction of external fish diseases and to provide effective support for disease control.

In addition, the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department is upgrading facilities at the Kyunsu Station. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries has been conducting a survey on fishery resources in the coastal waters of the Taninthayi Coast using the research vessel MV SEAFDEC 2 from 22 February to 22 March 2026, and will also continue upgrading the Kalwin Station.

Similarly, a research project on the reproduction, survival, distribution and ecosystem of the cockle species — jointly undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Marine Science from Myeik University — has been approved and is currently being implemented. In addition, the proceedings of the forum on the development of fish, shrimp, oyster, seaweed and aquatic animal breeding and research activities, held in January 2025, will also be published in book form.
