SCO Summit: An important initiative to develop Myanmar
CHINA and Myanmar have been maintaining their strong traditional bonds of friendship with each other for many years. China hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 in Tianjin. SCO member countries are working in unison to develop the economic and trade sectors among them.
During his working visit to China, Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, held talks with Mr Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China. At the meeting, the Chinese President reaffirmed China’s firm support for Myanmar’s development and stability. He added that China also supports Myanmar’s political arrangements and the progress of the Myanmar people, while upholding the spirit of building a peaceful and cooperative neighbourhood. He stressed that both countries will continue to cooperate in accordance with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
In his remarks, the Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar said: “Myanmar launched the anti-Fascist resistance on 27 March 1945, a date that has since been designated as Myanmar Armed Forces Day. On 27 March 2025, we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the resistance. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit is a highly important platform for promoting international cooperation. Myanmar became a dialogue partner of the SCO in May 2023. We look forward to China’s continued support for Myanmar to become a member state. I believe that today’s discussions will further strengthen and advance the friendly relations between the two countries.”
Afterwards, the discussions covered cooperation in Myanmar’s peace process, promoting trade, accelerating implementation of projects under the OBOR initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), effective utilization of natural resources, assistance regarding the recent major earthquake, China’s firm support for Myanmar in the international arena, strengthening bilateral relations, preparations for successfully holding the multiparty democratic general election scheduled for 28 December in Myanmar, and the arrangements to invite international election observer groups.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 was a focal point of Heads of State from 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations. Of them, the meeting of two leaders emphasized Myanmar’s preparations for the multiparty democratic general election, matters to continue under China’s support and diplomatic relations, the circumstances in which China will support Myanmar as an SCO member country, and the arrangements for relevant departments of both countries to continue discussions and cooperation across various sectors.
