OFFICIALS from the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission attended the first Technical Working Group Meeting of the Southeast Asian National Human Rights Institutions Forum-SEANF hosted by the Philippines Human Rights Commission, Current Chair of the forum, on 23 and 24 March via a virtual online platform.

The meeting was also joined by Chairmen and officials of the human rights commissions from other members of the forum, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Timor-Leste and the Philippines.

The meeting discussed the activities and progress of the forum membered National Human Rights Commissions following the 18th Annual Meeting of the Forum held in December 2021; implementation of an MoU on status of stateless persons signed among Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines Human Rights Commissions; implementation of the 2022- 2026 Strategic Plan and the 2022 Action Plan; sharing activities related to the global movement for the rights of the elderly.

The meeting also discussed matters related to the promotion and protection of human rights such as the lack of information during the COVID-19 pandemic and the occurrence of misinformation, the establishment of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum, liaison between the Forum and ASEAN Intergovernmental Commissions on Human Rights and plans to hold the second working group meeting and the 19th annual meeting of the Forum.

At the meeting, Myanmar presented the activities and developments of human rights education and protection activities after the 18th Annual Meeting of the Myanmar Human Rights Commission, disinformation and insufficient information during the COVID-19 period.

Chairman of the Commission U Hla Myint also participated in the discussion on the Strategic Plan and the 2022 Action Plan.

On the afternoon of 3 March, Myanmar officials attended the “SEANF Leadership in Mitigating Disinformation to Promote Human Rights Online Discussion Series on Influence Operations, a related virtual meeting of the Forum.
