THE Gambia filed an application against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 11 November 2019, accusing Myanmar of violating the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Myanmar submitted preliminary objections that the Court lacks jurisdiction to deal with the merits of the case or the entirety of the application is inadmissible to the Court on 20 January 2021. The International Court of Justice is holding a public hearing related to the preliminary objections raised by Myanmar from 21 February to 28 February 2022, at the Peace Palace, in The Hague, the Netherlands.

During the public hearing, Myanmar presented its first round of oral arguments on 21 February 2022. In the first round, the Agent of Myanmar, Union Minister for International Cooperation U Ko Ko Hlaing presented the opening statement and international advocates and counsels argued before the court regarding the Preliminary Objections raised by Myanmar.

Myanmar will make its second round of oral arguments on 25 February 2022 and Gambia will present its first round of oral arguments on 23 February 2022 and second round of oral arguments on 28 February 2022 respectively.

Together with the Agent, the Alternate Agent of Myanmar, Union Minister for Legal Affairs Attorney-General of the Union Dr Thida Oo also attends the public hearing at the Peace Palace, in The Hague.
