The Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Education and the Yangon Region government yesterday morning jointly organized a virtual meeting to discuss preparations for holding the 100th National Day celebrations.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister for Information Dr Pe Myint, Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Deputy Minister for Information U Aung Hla Tun, Yangon Regional Social Affairs Minister U Naing Ngan Lin, Permanent Secretaries and other relevant officials.

During the meeting, Union Minister Dr Pe Myint said that the spirit of nationalism was precious in the time when the country was enslaved, and it was the main force for collective struggles for independence. He added that the people of Myanmar must have the spirit of nationalism even after independence in order to protect the independence the country has gained.

On the other hand, he warned that if the spirit of nationalism turns into a narrow-minded mindset, it can go to extremes. And it goes to extremes, bad actions and behaviours will emerge, he said.

But the spirit of striving to be at the forefront in all sectors such as politics, economic and social sectors are a peaceful national spirit, said Union Minister Dr Pe Myint.

One of the unique features of the National Day of Myanmar is that it is linked to education. The day the 1920 University of Yangon Students’ Boycott began, was designated as National Day of Myanmar.

The objectives of this year’s National Day are to ensure that all school-age children have access to basic education, to enable access to practical subjects that will be beneficial to the socio-economy, to create lifelong learning opportunities for the people of Myanmar, to increase investments in education in ethnic areas for the comprehensive development of the Union, and to establish a Democratic Federal Union with the collective strength of all ethnic groups of Myanmar, according to Union Minister Dr Pe Myint.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein said that he discussed with the Myoma Alumni Group and some students’ unions in Yangon on plans to hold the National Day.

Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi said that the 100th National Day of Myanmar would fall on 9 December, and the COVID-19 crisis has caused some obstacles in celebrating the National Day. He said that his Ministry would cooperate with other ministries and departments in accordance with the decisions of the meeting.

During the meeting, Education Research, Planning and Training Department Director-General Dr Win Tun explained the plans for the 100th National Day ceremony, Yangon Regional Social Affairs Minister U Naing Ngan Lin explained the plan for the publication of a book marking the 100th National Day, and MRTV Director-General U Ye Naing explained MRTV’s plan to broadcast programmes marking the 100th National Day.
