A Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Myo Zaw Thein attended the Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum organized by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) at the Beijing International Convention Centre, in Beijing, China, from 27 to 28 May.
The initiative brings together 54 countries and nine international organizations to share experience and explore pathways to eradicate poverty.
At the opening ceremony, Chinese Vice-Premier Liu Guozhong, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made an opening speech.
During the forum, the establishment of the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD) was officially announced. The purpose of the alliance is to promote experience-sharing and cooperation in poverty reduction, rural development with public participation, and sustainable development based on mutual respect and benefit. The meeting also approved the GPPAD Charter, elected the chairperson and vice-chairpersons of the committee, and adopted the GPPAD Action Plan.
At noon, the forum was held in four parallel sessions. Ministers, deputy ministers, and representatives delivered speeches in their respective groups. The Union minister delivered a speech in Sub-Forum 3: Social Equity and Inclusive Development, reaffirming Myanmar’s support for cooperation, people-centred rural development, and sustainable poverty reduction. He also emphasized that Myanmar will continue to cooperate with international partner countries to build an inclusive and sustainable development environment.
On 28 May, the Union minister and party visited Pinggu District in Beijing to observe China’s implemented village-level poverty reduction efforts and projects related to rural development, modern agriculture, clean energy use, and improvement of living standards.
Moreover, they studied the practical development systems implemented to improve the socioeconomic status of locals and reduce poverty, and exchanged experiences and achievements for the sustainable development of rural areas.
The Union minister and party arrived back in Myanmar yesterday.
