On 11 February 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon, in collaboration with Yangon University of Foreign Languages (YUFL) and Mandalay University of Foreign Languages (MUFL), organized the 2026 Thai Speech Contest at the embassy.
The competition aimed to provide students majoring in the Thai Language with an opportunity to showcase their language proficiency, deepen their knowledge of Thailand, and exchange experiences with one another. This year marks the third consecutive year that the Embassy has hosted this event.
At the opening ceremony, Mr Sakeson Sarobol, Charg
é d’Affaires, delivered the opening remarks and was honoured by the presence of Daw Me Me Tin, Head of the Thai Department at YUFL, together with approximately 70 lecturers and students from both universities.
The competition took place from 9 am to noon, featuring six fourth-year students, three from YUFL and three from MUFL. Each contestant delivered a five-minute speech in Thai on a topic drawn by lot, including: The Richness of the Thai Language, What Makes ‘Travelling in Thailand’ Great? Popular Thai Cuisine, What I Admire Most About Thailand, How to Encourage Myanmar People to “Fall in Love” with Thailand, and My Future Plan After Graduation.
The performances were evaluated by a panel of four distinguished judges. Ma Nang Hom Seng Kao (YUFL) won the first prize, first runner-up Maung Sai Yan Lin Naing (MUFL), and 2nd runner-up Ma Kyal Sin Min (YUFL), with Ma Yoon Lei Thon (YUFL),
Ma Thae Su Nway (MUFL), and Ma Thin Thant Zaw (MUFL) winning honourable-mentioned prizes.
The Charg
é d’Affaires and the judges presented cash prizes and certificates to all contestants. On this occasion, the Embassy also presented a financial grant of US$ 1,200 to each university to support their Thai language departments.
In addition, students participated in a Thai vocabulary challenge focusing on Thai culture and general knowledge. Their performances demonstrated impressive fluency and a strong understanding of the language, reflecting the high standard of Thai language education in Myanmar.
The Royal Thai Embassy remains committed to organizing this annual event to encourage Myanmar youth to use the Thai Language with confidence and proficiency. Such initiatives contribute to strengthening mutual understanding and laying a foundation for sustainable people-to-people relations between the two countries.
