The Myanmar delegation, led by Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, travelled to Vietnam from 18 to 21 November at the invitation of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam to attend the sixth Inter-Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative Against Trafficking in Persons (COMMIT), held in Hanoi. The delegation returned to Yangon yesterday evening by air.
On 19 November, the heads of delegations from Mekong sub-region countries, including the Union Minister, met Mr Bui Thanh Son, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam. Following the meeting, the Myanmar delegation attended the opening ceremony of the sixth Ministerial Meeting (IMM6).
During the meeting, participants discussed national-level strategies and ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and protect victims, cross-border trafficking facilitated through the misuse of technology, cooperation among regional mechanisms, and future collaborative measures among Mekong sub-region countries. The fifth Sub-Regional Plan of Action (2025-2035) and the joint communiqué of the meeting were also released.
In the afternoon, the delegation met the team led by Senior Lt-Gen Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, to discuss the resumption of security cooperation mechanisms and security meetings between the two ministries, as well as bilateral cooperation on cross-border crime, including human trafficking.
Afterwards, the Myanmar delegation held further discussions with the team led by Mr Liu Zhong Yi, Deputy Minister of China’s Ministry of Public Security, on cooperation regarding online scam suppression, stability in border areas, and security and rule-of-law matters. In the evening, the delegation attended a welcome dinner hosted by Senior Lt-Gen Nguyen Van Long.
On 20 November, the Myanmar delegation led by the Union Minister, together with representatives from the Mekong sub-region member countries attending the meeting, visited the Trang An cultural heritage area and Bai Dinh Temple in Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam.
During the Myanmar delegation’s trip to the sixth Inter-Ministerial Meeting of the Mekong Sub-region Cooperation Programme on Human Trafficking (IMM6), discussions reportedly focused on collaborative efforts among Mekong sub-region countries to combat human trafficking, as well as security and rule-of-law cooperation between Myanmar and Vietnam and between Myanmar and China.
