Dr Charlie Than, Union Minister for Industry and Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee on the Development of Industries and Industrial Zones, visited the Yenangyaung Industrial Zone in Magway Region on 23 August.

At the Industrial Zone Hall, the Union minister met the chairman and members of the Zone Management Committee, entrepreneurs, the rector and head of the Chemistry Department from Yenangyaung University, the principal of the Government Technical Institute, and relevant departmental officials.

During the meeting, the Union minister highlighted that the development of industrial zones would not only boost national production but also create job opportunities for locals, thereby contributing to the region’s socioeconomic growth. He noted that the Industrial Zone Law and its bylaws had already been enacted to ensure systematic development, and that regions and states are required to oversee compliance and classify industrial zones accordingly.

He emphasized that all stakeholders must strictly follow the provisions of the Industrial Zone Law and bylaws. He pointed out that industries can only operate sustainably if they meet market demand, which requires products to be of high quality, affordable, and properly packaged. He also underlined the importance of continuous research and development to produce competitive goods.

The Union minister urged industries to work in partnership with local universities and colleges. He explained that the Ministry of Industry has been providing various training programmes, including courses in electricity, boiler operation and maintenance, household electrical installation, agricultural engine maintenance, welding, and short-term technical courses, some of which are conducted on-site. He assured participants that additional courses would be arranged if needed.

Following his remarks, the Zone Management Committee chairman presented updates on ongoing activities and requirements within the zone. The Magway Region economic minister reported on relevant laws for systematic development. Departmental officials provided details on the zone’s status, the socioeconomic development research, strengthening linkages between industries and schools, workforce development, resource requirements, raw material supply, technology access, and planned knowledge-sharing sessions, and industrial entrepreneurs explained the challenges in operations. The Union minister coordinated all measures reported.

In the afternoon, the Union minister inspected production processes at the Alpha Vina concrete post factory, the Win Thamaseikta oil mill, and King Golden Dragon Co Ltd, where STAR motorcycles are assembled under the SKD system.
