Vice President U Henry Van Thio, alongside Chin State Chief Minister U Salai Lian Luai, Chin State Hluttaw Speaker U Zo Bawi, Chin State Ministers and relevant officials, inspected the first trial landing of an aircraft (ATR 72-600 owned by Myanmar National Airlines) at the new Surbung Airport in Falam Township, Chin State, yesterday morning.

After greeting with captains Zaw Min Oo and Min Thu Zaw, the Vice President held a meeting with officials in the guest hall of the airport and praised the historic day of Chin State for the first trial flight at its new airport.

The Vice President also expressed thanks to all stakeholders, including local engineers and experts, involved in the airport construction project, saying that it was challenging to build the airport because it is situated highest above sea level.

The Surbung Airport is located on Surbung mountain range 8.5 miles northwest of Falam Town, Chin State. It is situated at an altitude of 6,000 feet above sea level. The airport construction project was worth K35.191 billion. The area of the airport is 1,254.73 acres. The airport runway is 6,000 feet long and 100 feet wide and is a Flexible Pavement type runway. The permitted load of the runway is 51,000 lbs (23,000 Kg). A tourism information counter will be opened at the airport.

The new airport will uplift socio-economic aspects of the residents in Chin State, provide efficient transport to the area, promote tourism and trade, speed up rescue works in the area, create job opportunities, and enhance development.
