THE Global Media and Information Literacy Week was held at the Ministry of Information in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, Deputy Minister U Ye Tint, departmental officials, teachers and students of basic education high schools of Zeyathiri and Zabuthiri townships and the Khit Shae Hsaung private high school were present on the occasion.
In his opening speech, the Union Minister said that UNESCO initiated the Global Media and Information Literacy Week in the fourth week of October, starting in 2012, and Myanmar joined it in 2018. The ceremony aims to promote awareness about the crucial role of media and information literacy in fostering a better understanding of access to covering news, honour the progress in understanding media and information literacy and stimulate and promote public awareness around the world.
This year’s theme is “The New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information”, and the activities will be conducted on 24 and 25 October.
He then urged the youths to use social media effectively, spend their lives with proper knowledge of literary and skills and develop reading habits.
He also highlighted the priority the Prime Minister gave to youth sectors where the youths should learn and perfect modern technologies.
Then, he presented certificates of appreciation to the teachers who participated in talk shows on media and information literacy and donated media and information-related books to supervisor teachers.
During the talk show, participants discussed matters related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), the advantages and disadvantages of technology, AI and media role, social media that spread misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, good points and weak points of social media and telecommunication law. Students raised questions about what they wanted to know.
The deputy minister and teachers awarded the students who won in the question and answer session of media and information.
He concluded the event and led the lot-drawing session for teachers and students.
