THE inspection team, led by U Kyaw Soe and U Tin Aung, members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, inspected the Police Lock-up and Court Detention Centre in Myaungmya Township, Ayeyawady Region, on 5 February 2024 and inspected Myaungmya Prison on 6 February 2024 and Labutta Youth Strength Training School in Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Region, on 7 February 2024 under Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law.

The inspection team inspected the Myaungmya Police Lock-up and Court Detention Centre, the conditions of the remand period of detainees, family visits, food supply, and the water sanitation system of the detention centres.

The inspection team inspected the prison under the MNHRC law and procedures to see whether the prisoners and detainees enjoy fundamental rights, including appropriate food supply, access to healthcare, adequate purified water, and cleanliness of police lock-up and court detention centre. The inspection team enquired about prisoners to ensure they could get their personal items and items sent by families, family visits and human rights violations and torture cases in the prison and detention centres. The inspection team also privately interviewed the prisoners who wished to meet with the team freely and privately and inspected the dormitories, clinic, library, kitchen, food storage, water purifier, and water sanitation system.

Additionally, the MNHRC donated 50 books for the prisoners.

Then, the inspection team inspected the Labutta Youth Strength Training School under the MNHRC Law and procedures to determine whether the students in the training school can get fundamental human rights, including healthcare services, food supply, provision of adequate purified water, availability of Citizenship Scrutiny Card, support programmes for physical and mental development as well as rights to education, vocational training, communication with their families, reintegration with their families and freedom of religion.

MNHRC will send recommendations to the relevant departments for necessary action based on the findings during the inspection.
