The 38th Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) and Associated Meetings are being held from 24 to 27 August through videoconferencing.

Viet Nam is a rotating host country this year.

Permanent Secretary U Than Zaw, and government officials participated in the meetings from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy in Nay Pyi Taw.

The senior officials meeting discussed the 7 parts to the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) which are ASEAN Power Grid, Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline, Coal and Clean Coal Technology, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Regional Energy Policy and Planning, and Civilian Nuclear Energy. They are also set to approve Phase II of the APAEC (2021-2025).

The associated meetings were held with the affiliated nations USA, Russia, Countries of East Asia, ASEAN+3 members of China, Japan and South Korea, International Organizations and Dialogue Partners such as the International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The ongoing meetings will focus on regional and international progress in the energy sector, protection and containment of COVID-19, and improving cooperation in the energy sector.

Officials from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, and the Ministry of Planning, Finance and Industry will also take part at the respective meetings.
