UNION Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win met Mr Thushara Fernando, the World Health Organization (WHO) Resident Representative to Myanmar, at the Ministry of Health’s conference hall yesterday.

During the meeting, they discussed the Ministry’s continued efforts in providing emergency healthcare services to earthquake-affected people and patients. The Union Minister highlighted that despite many healthcare workers themselves being victims of the earthquake, they remained committed to ensuring uninterrupted medical services. They also discussed the need for technical and equipment support to produce and fit prosthetic limbs for patients from Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region, and Sagaing Region who had lost limbs in the disaster.

Other topics included cooperation in providing mental health support to people in the affected areas, monitoring for potential outbreaks of infectious diseases following the quake, and ongoing prevention and control measures. The two sides also talked openly about ways to improve healthcare services in the affected areas beyond their original state.

Also present at the meeting were the deputy minister for Health, directors-general, WHO representatives, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Health.

In a related event on 28 April, the Union minister received monetary donations for healthcare support for both health workers and earthquake victims in Mandalay. These included K20 million donated by the Incheon Dental Association, K5 million from Grand Medi Core Co Ltd, and K10 million from the Nay Pyi Taw-based Kyemon Hospital. Certificates of appreciation were presented in return, and words of thanks were extended to the donors.
