Innovative Thinking for the Advancement of Traditional Medicine in Myanmar

The Ministry of Health (MOH), Myanmar, laid down two objectives, to enable every citizen to attain full life expectancy and enjoy longevity of life, and to ensure that every citizen is free from diseases. To do that, traditional medicine is one of the main supporting issues.

In Myanmar, traditional medicine has been regarded as an invaluable national heritage and flourished significantly as a major part of the Myanmar culture. The provision of traditional medicine services is at the basic health services level to make essential traditional medicine easily accessible for the benefit of both urban and rural populations. It also supports and uplifts the health status of the people of Myanmar in the context of primary healthcare. Particularly for the rural population, traditional medicine is still a priority and has been carried out in the mode of preventive focus, getting along with the traditional values and the traditional art of treatment.

The Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win attended the opening ceremony of the 2024 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Traditional Medicine on 27 June 2024. At the event, the Union Minister stressed that Shanghai Co-operation Organization member states, observers, physicians of partner countries, experts and business people are considering the sector-wise activities related to traditional medicines. Moreover, the use of modern technologies and investments in scientific research can promote the quality, effectiveness, safety and use of traditional drugs. Advancing traditional medicine in Myanmar with innovative thinking involves a multi-faceted approach that integrates modern technology, research methodologies, and sustainable practices while respecting and preserving cultural heritage. The following strategies are needed to consider innovative ways of thinking perspectives: –

10. Innovation in Product Development

Value Addition: Add value to traditional medicine products through improved packaging, branding, and marketing strategies.

Implementing these strategies requires a coordinated effort from various stakeholders, including government bodies, healthcare providers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and local communities. By integrating traditional knowledge with modern innovations, Myanmar can develop a robust traditional medicine sector that contributes to the health and well-being of its people while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
