A conference titled ‘The Role of Parliament in Peace Building Processes’ was opened at the Hluttaw Building in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon, with the aims to exchange views of well-experienced international parliamentarians, Myanmar Hluttaw representatives and stakeholders in peace building processes.
Speaker of Pyidaungsu Hlutaw and Pyithu Hluttaw U T Khun Myat delivered an opening remark at the ceremony that is also attended by Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than, Pyithu Hluttaw Deputy Speaker U Tun Tun Hein, Amyotha Hluttaw Deputy Speaker U Aye Tha Aung, speakers of State/Region Hluttaws, chairpersons of Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw committees, secretaries, Member of the Hungarian Parliament states and Chairperson of Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Dr Agnes Vadai, Joint Committee on International Inter-Parliamentary Union Chairman Dr Than Win and committee members, Hluttaw representatives, MPs of State/Region Hluttaws, invited guests and Hluttaw staff members.
In his opening remark, Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat recognized mutual understanding, friendly relations and close cooperation between the IPU and Myanmar Hluttaw.
He also emphasized the important role of Hluttaw representatives in peace building processes, socioeconomic losses of ethnic people in conflict-torn areas and the government’s peacemaking efforts.
The Speaker also urged the Hluttaw representatives to promote all-inclusive democratic policies and awareness for peace in respective constituency.
Then, Dr Agnes Vadai and Dr Than Win delivered speeches.
The dialogue on the issue of consequences from conflicts and the role of parliamentarians was taken part by the parliamentarians and experts from Myanmar, South Africa, Thailand and the Philippines.
After the question and answer session, Dr Agnes Vadai read out IPU’s message on the event which will be held until 26 February.
