The Union Election Commission (UEC) held a meeting yesterday at the UEC office’s conference hall with the political parties.
Speaking at the meeting, UEC Chairman U Than Soe said the election will be held in phases. The date and the townships for Phase I have already been announced, and the dates for the following phases will also be announced later. Although all political parties are allowed to participate in the election, they can do so only in accordance with the law. Although the required number of party members and offices to be opened within the designated period was relaxed, four political parties that failed to submit the required information were dissolved.
Regarding the submission of candidate lists for parliamentary representatives, some political parties requested an extension of the submission deadline. The final date for candidate submission and the number of candidates to be submitted have also been revised and set. The political parties have been informed to send the prioritized candidate lists for the PR constituencies to the commission no later than 30 November and this notice is being reminded once again.
He also added that the announcements and notices regarding the voter lists are also released promptly, and two methods of casting a vote are also being arranged for the displaced people to be able to cast a vote in their residing places or return to their places for early votes. The voters in 56 townships where elections will not be held can cast their vote during the interim election period, and will be invited to the political parties to analyze before releasing the second voting lists.
He then highlighted the need to follow the Election Law and educate the party members and their supporters to have knowledge regarding the stipulated law.
He continued that the expenditure for one candidate who will compete in three Hluttaws will be K15 million, whereas K30 million for one ethnic candidate. The expenditure must be submitted to the relevant election sub-commission within the fixed period, and if they fail to do so, they will be regarded as dishonest. Therefore, the expenditure must be submitted on time.
The relevant officials of the political parties coordinated the discussion, and the UEC chairman concluded the meeting. Also present at the meeting were UEC members, officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, General Administration Department, Ministry of Immigration and Population, UEC office, chairpersons, leaders and officials of 57 political parties.
