Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, while in Chengdu of China, responded to queries on his working visit raised by news media from China at the Shangri-La Hotel in Chengdu yesterday afternoon.

At the interview, Chinese media such as Chengdu Daily, Chengdu Business Daily, West China Metropolis Daily, Chengdu Television (CDTV), Sichuan Television (SCTV), China Central Television (CCTV), People’s Daily Online and Xinhua News Agency of China raised questions to Acting President and SSPC Chairman of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Min Aung Hlaing during his working visit to China on his attendance to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization-(SCO)Summit 2025 and the parade to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, holding the Myanmar-China economic cooperation promotion meetings in Tianjin and Chengdu to enhance investment and trade between the two countries, and promotion of friendship and cooperation.

In a meeting with media personnel, the Acting President and SSPC Chairman of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar explained his attendance at the SCO Summit and holding meetings with Chinese businesspersons to enhance investment and economic cooperation between the two countries. His clarifications are as follows: –

Mingalaba! Everyone. Following an invitation from Mr Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, I visited China on a goodwill trip from 30 August until today, 6 September, for a total of eight days. On the first day, 31 August, I attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit Plus in Tianjin. At that Summit, Myanmar, as a dialogue partner country, had already participated in 2023. In line with the invitation from the Chinese President, I attended this summit and delivered a speech. During the event, the President of the People’s Republic of China discussed five proposals under the Global Governance Initiative for reforming and improving global governance. These proposals are consistent with the current state of the world. He highlighted that there are developed countries, developing countries, and impoverished countries around the world. While circumstances differ from country to country, some conditions are similar. Yet, powerful nations often exert political, economic, financial, and military pressure on both equally powerful countries and weaker nations. So, President Mr Xi Jinping emphasized this issue and explained the need for reforms and changes to address it. Therefore, Myanmar fully supports these five proposals, and we discussed this position during the meeting. World leaders also expressed their support. I would like to say that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit was a complete success. Continuing the trip, on 3 September, I attended the ceremony marking the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. It was an extremely grand military parade. First, I observed the highly organized training of the Chinese military, which is impressive. Second, I saw the full discipline of the Chinese people. Third, I witnessed the high level of China’s national defence capability. Furthermore, China can provide protection globally. Some of the defence equipment I saw was beyond our expectations, and we believe it can safeguard the world against threats from powerful countries. Given that this anniversary commemorates 80 years since the people endured oppression by fascists, this parade was highly meaningful and impactful. During this trip, I also visited Heilongjiang Province in northeast China and Sichuan Province, where I am today, as part of a goodwill mission to enhance cooperative efforts between our two countries. This concludes today’s trip.

During the rest of the trip, while examining how our two countries can cooperate in various sectors, I found that there are many opportunities for collaboration. Regarding economic matters, both sides also have numerous opportunities for trade to work together. In Tianjin, Sichuan, Harbin, and Chengdu, I met major Chinese businesspeople and spoke openly about the economic opportunities in Myanmar. The Union ministers accompanying me were able to provide detailed explanations. The Chinese businesspeople actively participated in discussions and meetings, showing great interest, which gives both sides high expectations for increased economic cooperation. This was my 12th visit to China, and I would like to say that this trip has been the most successful one so far. Myanmar is a trustworthy and good neighbour of China. China has also always hoped to have Myanmar as a reliable partner. I want to emphasize that this trip created strong and confident opportunities for cooperation between our two countries. I also hope that China will continue to work closely with Myanmar. The participation of everyone here has contributed to making this a successful trip. Thank you all. Q: Esteemed Acting President, I am a reporter from People’s Daily Online Media. My question is regarding China-Myanmar relations and diplomatic ties, which have now reached their 75th anniversary this year. As the Acting President, I would like to know in which sectors the two countries will continue to collaborate strategically in the future, and how you plan to further promote cooperation and harmony between China and Myanmar.

A: As I mentioned earlier, Myanmar and China are countries with a shared kinship-based relationship. They also share a border of approximately 1,300 miles as neighbouring countries. The history between the two nations includes interactions spanning many years, and the bilateral relationship has been built on complete trust. Therefore, we will continue to collaborate across all sectors. Moreover, China has an advantage in renewable energy (Green Policy). Since this policy aligns with our own approach of sustainable development and environmental care, we plan to leverage China’s experience to cooperate in a way that allows Myanmar to also benefit from the results today.

Q: I am from Xinhua News Agency. I would like to raise two questions. The first one is that Myanmar is an SCO partner country. You, the Acting President, attended the SCO Summit at the invitation of our President. At the summit, our President underscored the Global Governance Initiative (GGI). In this regard, what is your view on the plan proposed by President Xi Jinping? And how do you think that plan impacts the current global situation? This is the first question. The second question is that China-Myanmar diplomatic relations turn 75 years old this year. When President Xi Jinping met you in Tianjin, he noted that China–Myanmar relations are a kinship-based relationship, with a long history rooted in people-to-people ties. Both sides have been cooperating strategically, building on 75 years of China-Myanmar diplomatic relations. As it is fostering a harmonious and mutually beneficial environment, bringing peace and well-being to the peoples of both countries, my question is: As of now, how would you comment on the progress of China-Myanmar relations?

A: Regarding the global SCO Summit Plus, President Xi Jinping presented a five-point Global Governance Initiative. I also mentioned it at the beginning of my remarks. On the world stage, there are major powers that exercise influence politically, economically, religiously, and militarily. For example, the United States exerts pressure and sanctions on China, and we experience similar pressures – not just financially, but also politically and economically. These five points highlight existing global weaknesses and emphasize the need for corrective action. Therefore, I would like to stress the importance of cooperation among nations. President Xi Jinping also conveyed that China is prepared to face any pressure or threat, and we understand this to mean that China is ready to manage these challenges effectively. In addition, there were comments regarding the 75th anniversary of China-Myanmar relations. Even though China-Myanmar diplomatic relations have officially lasted 75 years, the relationship between our two countries has existed for many centuries. We are also neighbouring countries. China’s development positively influences Myanmar, just as Myanmar’s development and stability contribute to China’s progress. The kinship-based relationship between China and Myanmar is recognized by both countries. As strategic partners, both sides agree to experience prosperity and challenges together. Therefore, during my current tenure, our country has placed special emphasis on this relationship, and it is evident that China is actively cooperating as well. Currently, China-Myanmar relations are at their best and highest level. However, we will continue to work toward an even better, higher, and stronger level of cooperation. “Good” is never permanent. China’s ongoing development shows an example of better progress. Similarly, in advancing bilateral cooperation, both sides must strive to improve continuously. I can say that this visit has achieved better results than the previous situation. OK.

Q: Esteemed President, I am from Sichuan Daily Media. I have two questions. The first question is: During your current visit to Sichuan, how do you feel, and what impressions or benefits have you gained? The second question is: In terms of areas for cooperation between Sichuan and Myanmar, which sectors do you hope to see collaboration in?

A: The main reason for coming to Sichuan Province is that I am visiting Chengdu. Including this visit, I have been to Chengdu five times. The first time was back in 2007, which was 18 years ago. During my visits, I have seen that Chengdu, which represents Sichuan, has developed significantly. We are impressed. We also discussed with the Provincial Party Secretary about areas for cooperation, and both sides have agreed to collaborate. There are broad areas for cooperation between Sichuan Province and Myanmar. Sichuan is advanced in industrial technology and highly developed in the education sector. Its agricultural sector is also strong. However, there are agricultural products, aboveground and underground resources, and marine products that Sichuan does not have but Myanmar possesses in abundance. Therefore, if we are to cooperate in these areas, I would like to say that such initiatives represent China. Regarding aviation transport, arrangements are being made to implement it as quickly as possible. As trade increases, air traffic will also grow. In any case, cooperation between Sichuan Province and Myanmar is expected to develop far more extensively than in the past. So, I would like to invite media teams from Sichuan Province to visit Myanmar to observe and learn. By coming, they will better understand the significance of how to carry out cooperation with Myanmar. That’s all. Thank you.
