A final consultation meeting on the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (Draft) was held through videoconferencing yesterday afternoon.

Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi, in his capacity as the Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation participated in the meeting and discussed the draft policy.

Those present at the meeting were Yangon Region Minister of Planning and Finance U Ye Min Oo, Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General and Directors from respective Ministries, Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen of the respective non-governmental organizations, members of the Council, UNESCAP officials and international policy experts.

At the meeting, the Union Minister said that his ministry, with the assistance of UNESCAP, has sought advice from international policy experts on the implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (Draft) for systematic, sustainable and balanced development activities.

The policy was drawn for six months in consultations with various ministries, organizations and experts.

He added that the drafted policy is being finalized now and it is intended to be a more comprehensive policy with the input of the participating experts.

He urged the relevant ministries to participate in the discussion since they will cooperate in implementing the policy and he expressed words of thanks for the discussions.

In making a speech, Chief of Technology and Innovation Division Mr Jonathan Wong from United Nations ESCAP talked about the importance of science, technology and innovation for overcoming the challenges facing a nation and achieving SDG 2030.

He continued that investing in science, technology and innovation sector was a transition path for the country’s economic goals, sustainable social developments and economy. And the sector needs intergovernmental cooperation to enhance the country’s technological capabilities.

He also expressed thanks to the Director-General for the Department of Research and Innovation under the Ministry of Education, and representatives from the organizations taken part in the drafting of the policy even during the COVID-19 period.
