Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat led Myanmar parliamentary representatives in joining the virtual opening ceremony of 41st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA 41) hosted by Viet Nam yesterday.

The online AIPA 41 is the three-day event until 10 September, and is held under the theme ‘Parliamentary Diplomacy for a Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN Community’ in Ha Noi.

The ceremony was opened with Vietnamese traditional songs and dances, as well as AIPA song.

The Vietnamese President, the Prime Minister and Chair of National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, in her capacity as the rotating Chair of AIPA 41, extended greetings and delivered an opening remark.

In delivering his remark, the leader of Myanmar parliamentary representatives U T Khun Myat talked about the need of AIPA members for development of ASEAN region, promoting multilateralism, international connectivity and respect for law to ensure peace and prosperity of the region, and the importance of all-inclusiveness in the accomplishment of ASEAN Community Vision 2025.

He also highlighted that effective response to complicated changes under global and regional situations could create opportunities, and the AIPA also needs to cooperate with international parliaments more closely.

The Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) was also ‘attended’ by Amyotha Hluttaw representative Daw Shwe Shwe Sein Latt and Pyithu Hluttaw representative Dr Khin Soe Soe Kyi. The WAIPA approved the motion titled ‘Promoting the role of women parliamentarians in securing jobs and income for women workers’.
Pyithu Hluttaw representatives U Naing Htoo Aung and Dr Soe Moe Thu also took part in the AIPA Young Parliamentarians for the topic ‘The engagement of AIPA young parliamentarians in ASEAN Community Building’.

The remaining AIPA committee meetings will be held today.
