A coordination meeting of the Permanent Residency Implementation Central Committee was held at the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.

Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe, in his capacity as the committee chairperson, took part in the meeting, together with Deputy Minister U Myint Kyaing, permanent secretaries and directors-general who are committee members, and relevant officials.

During the meeting, Union Minister U Thein Swe talked about effective management of central committee in the process of issuing permanent residency in line with the existing laws and international standards.

On 18 November, 2014, the ministry announced a rule related to permanent residency. And an amending rule for the permanent residency was enacted on 27 April 2017. As a result, initial applications for permanent residence permits can be applied not only in Myanmar but also at Myanmar embassies in foreign countries.

Myanmar introduced the permanent residency system in 2015. The applicants are classified into four types: experts, investors, former Myanmar nationals, and foreigners who are related to Myanmar nationals.

Under this system, the permanent residency has been granted to 617 persons out of 705 foreign citizen applicants in accordance with the laws and rules.

The applicants need the approval of the central committee after passing the scrutiny of the work committee.

The meeting passed the permanent residency to an expert, 3 investors, 30 former Myanmar nationals, 15 foreigners who are related to Myanmar nationals, and 21 family members of them, totally 70. Face-to-face interviews will be held depending on the situations of COVID-19 pandemic.
